A tough day at Oulton for Abbie Eaton

Abbie Eaton (photo by Marc Waller)Abbie was racing last weekend in the latest rounds of the BRSCC Mazda Supercup at Oulton Park. Last time out at Anglesey, she’d had a clean sweep of 3 victories as well as pole and fastest lap.

This had put her on top of the championship so she had high hopes going to Oulton.

Unofrtunately I was away at Brands Hatch reporting on the British GT championship but this is the report on what happened from Abbie’s website;

Qualifying.

Abbie qualified on pole with Mike Comber close behind. Then a half a second gap to 3rd position.

Race One

Abbie got a good start and slotted into the lead off the line but into lodge she made a mistake that allowed Mike Comber, O’Neil and Roche to get by. She battled with Mike for the rest of the lap until going down the straight into Knickerbrook chicane she was alongside him on the left, he proceeded to try and squeeze her as far over to the left as possible in an attempt to get her to back out and slot behind. Obviously Abbie held her line and he turned himself around on Abbie’s car and into the barriers.

Abbie carried on chasing down Paul O’Neil and Tom Roche but was unable to make a move in time. The cars crossed the line three abreast with only 0.2 seconds separating them all. It was Paul O’Neil in first position, followed by Tom and then Abbie.

The incident was reviewed and the Clerk came to the decision that Mike was in the wrong and Abbie was in the right. (The footage says it all). Mike then appealed this decision so it was to go to the MSA Stewards at the meeting for them to decide whether they agreed with the Clerk or not.

Race Two

Abbie started 3rd on the grid for race two and held third for the first two laps, she then made a move on Paul O’Neil into 2nd position and set about hunting down Tom Roche. Meanwhile Mike Comber had slotted in behind Abbie and into Knickerbrook chicane he hit Abbie from behind, once on entry, once mid corner, and once on the next braking point. He then went on to hit Abbie again at Druids and then the final hit into Lodge corner sent her into a spin. Whilst T-boning Abbie he kept his foot in and pushed her along the track. Luckily the other cars nearby avoided her.

As soon as the race finished Abbie went up to the Clerks office with the footage from both rear and front cameras as this was clearly a retaliation response from Comber and she was lucky not to have been in a huge accident.

Meanwhile the decision from Race 1 was looked at by the MSA Stewards with both Mike and Abbie in the room. Both gave their sides to the incident and the footage from three different cars was shown. At 8.25pm the MSA Stewards ruled the the clerks decision was correct and Mike’s appeal was thrown out.

Mike has been excluded from Race 2 and with any hope will have his licence revoked.

Abbie is now 2nd in the championship, 4 points behind Tom Roche. With only 4 races to go it’s going to be a tough one.
