Antonio Fuoco has secured Ferrari’s third straight pole position in the headlining Hypercar category in 2025 at Spa-Francorchamps, as Akkodis ASP Team rookie Finn Gehrsitz made history for Lexus.
Hypercar
Ferrari AF Corse takes a third consecutive pole position in 2025 as Antonio Fuoco set a 1:59.617s lap to seal the top spot in the #50 Ferrari AF Corse 499P. The Prancing Horse jumped to the top again as Fuoco took the pole by 0.347s.
“To be honest, this what I love about this job, because after Imola there was so much talk going around,” Fuoco revealed. “I know my potential and I know the potential of the team, so it was just a matter of putting everything together and I think today we showed how we react. Imola was a mistake that cost us quite a lot and for sure, the pressure was on my shoulders, but I think I’ve shown it doesn’t make any difference.
“We were able to manage tyre warm-up well, which I think is where we made the difference compared to the others. The car worked really well today and I put quite a clean lap together, which was not easy in these conditions, especially as we only had one ‘push’ lap available. We know it’s going to be a long, tough race, so we just have to try to maximise it.”
The #83 AF Corse Ferrari joins the #50 car on the front-row of the grid as Robert Kubica is the only other driver to get inside the two-minute mark on a 1:59.964s best.
Making it a 1-2-3 for Ferrari is Antonio Giovinazzi in the Imola winning #51 Ferrari AF Corse 499P. He set a 2m00201s best in the car that was repaired after the Italian crashed in the FP2 session on Thursday afternoon. Giovinazzi survived a late scare with a gravelly moment on the exit of Les Combes
The best non-Ferrari is the #94 Peugeot TotalEnergies 9X8 Hypercar driven by local ace Stoffel Vandoorne in the most competitive showing for the Lions in recent times.
The #12 Cadillac Hertz Team Jota Hypercar is fifth ahead of the #36 Alpine in sixth with Alex Lynn and Mick Schumacher setting the best laps respectively.
The rest of the top ten is made up of 7th #93 Peugeot; 8th #20 BMW; 9th #35 Alpine; 10th #38 Cadillac.
Porsche Penske, Aston Martin THOR and Toyota Gazoo Racing all failed to make it through the qualifying period into the Hyperpole session.
LMGT3
Finn Gehrsitz took a brilliant pole position for the LMGT3 class after hooking up an excellent lap of 2:17.732s in the #78 Akkodis ASP Lexus. The young German took his first ever WEC pole position and the maiden top spot for Akkodis ASP in the WEC. Getting the car through in to the LMGT3 Hyperpole session was Arnold Robin.
“My experience is not that high compared to many other drivers here,” acknowledged Gehrsitz, “but preparation was definitely the key and I think the result was down to the perfect combination of car, team and drivers. I didn’t expect this so early, but I’m super-happy to be on pole and to see how we are getting better from race-to-race.”
Gehrsitz’s early Hyperpole time was attacked by several competitors in the final moments of the session but held on for pole.
Joining Lexus on the front row of the grid will be the #10 Racing Spirit of LeMan Aston Martin as Edoardo Barrichello got within 0.276s of the pole time.
The #77 Proton Competition Ford Mustang LMGT3 was third as Ben Tuck snatched a late quick lap to claim the team’s best qualifying of the season.
Lining up fourth behind the Lexus, Spirit of LeMan Aston and the sister #77 Proton entered Mustang, will be the #88 Proton Competition Ford Mustang, as Stefano Gattuso qualified and Giammarco Levorato completed a strong lap in the Hyperpole session.
Aston Martins will start second and fifth as the Heart of Racing car set a Hyperpole time of 2:18.314s with Zacharie Robichon setting the best time.
The #54 VISTA AF Corse Ferrari of Francesco Castellacci completes the top six.
The initial qualifying session saw an incredibly tight battle that saw the top three covered by a only 0.053s,
The #60 Iron Lynx Mercedes that was damaged in FP2 on Thursday ended the qualifying session at the back of the 36 car grid despite the herculean job by the team.
The #85 Iron Dames Porsche, with drivers Celia Martin, Rahel Frey and Michelle Gatting will start overall in 31st and in 13th in the LMGT3 class.
