There are 70 Chevrolet dealers in the UK and they will receive part of a compensation package for Europe of up to $1 Billion.
GM says it will support current Chevrolet owners after the franchise disappears towards the end of 2015, and certain models such as the Corvette sports car will continue to be available.
A spokesman for Chevrolet in the UK said, “It is still very early days for us as the announcement was only made today and there is a lot to do and discuss with our dealer network but we will continue to support them and our customers.
“We will be entering into consultations with all parties concerned and affected by the announcement over the next few months.”
He added, “We will dramatically scale back our main stream models in Europe and the UK over the next two years.”
The news comes as the lastest car sales figures from the SMMT show Chevrolet business in Britain went down over 23% with less than 600 new cars sold in a market which generally increased by 7% to a best monthly high since 2004 and so far this year the brand has trailed last year by just under 14%. Stablemate Vauxhall is up 10% this year and 7% in November, which put them on 12.33% of UK sales and close to overtaking market leader Ford with 13.18% as it saw its sales dip in the month against market trend.
The strong November sales saw the total overtake that for the whole of 2012 when it was 2 Million and to reach 2.1 M in the first eleven months.
The SMMT believes about 2.25 M new cars will be registered by the end of December.
Best sellers last month were: Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Vauxhall Corsa, VW Golf, Vauxhall Insignia, Nissan Qashqai, Fiat 500, BMW 3 Series and Nissan Juke.
Significantly 1:10 sales were of electric cars, double the number recorded in 2011.
