Former champion and all-round legend of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship Fabrizio Giovanardi will return to the grid for the upcoming season after a four-year break.
The Italian was announced as Airwaves Racing’s new driver during a special edition of popular online radio show Tin Top Tuesday yesterday (4th February).
Airwaves’ team boss David Bartrum says; “This is a very important year for Airwaves Racing. This is going to be the one when we really do underline the product we’ve built here at Motorbase Performance and Fabrizio is the man to show you how it should go.
“It was something Airwaves set out in their criteria; they wanted us to up our game, and I was very happy to meet it.”
It’s no secret that Giovanardi is excited ahead of his BTCC return; “I am really looking forward to coming back to this special championship with the team. For the last four years I have done long distance racing and for me, it’s quite boring!
“In 2008 and 2009 I had a big battle with this team and they were one of the teams to beat then. After four years I believe they’ve got good experience, they’ve grown up and they are right at this time to give me the winning chance.”
The news comes a week after another former champion, Alain Menu, was confirmed via a YouTube video as Team BMR’s new signing – meaning six champions are currently set to start the season at the end of March at Brands Hatch in Kent. By Nikki Thompson – Photos by Marc Waller
