Ferrari says a decade without a championship title would be “a tragedy”

Ferrari (Photo by Ferrari)Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne has said that if the constructor doesn’t win another F1 World Championship by 2018 then it would be a disaster and major embarrassment for the company.

In an interview with Italy’s Gazzetta Dello Sport newspaper, Marchionne said “If we were to somehow fail to win a title over a 10-year span, it would be a tragedy.” The comments will be sure to put a lot of pressure on the struggling team who use to dominate the sport for much of the 90s and even early 00s.

Looking at the F1 betting sites it seems like there is only one obstacle in Ferrari’s way of winning both the Drivers and Constructors championships this season. Unfortunately that obstacle is Mercedes, who dominated the sport last season winning nearly every race. F1 betting site Coral has Mercedes at odds of just 1/7 to win their third constructors championship in a row, with Ferrari just behind at 4/1. But there is a fierce rivalry between Rosberg and Hamilton, and if the battle between them gets too heated and they start driving each other off the road then Ferrari could take advantage. The battle between the two Mercedes drivers will more than likely be the story of the season once again this year, and F1’s 2016 coverage at Coral will constantly be updating with the latest news and F1 betting odds.

Ferrari haven’t won a Driver’s title since 2007 when Kimi Raikkonen shocked the whole field to move from third to first in the season’s standings in the last race of the season. A gearbox problem resulted in the favourite to win the title Lewis Hamilton only finishing the race in seventh place. That meant the final standings showed that the season was one of the closest ever, with just one point separating the winner Kimi Raikkonen from joint second place Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

Kimi’s teammate Felippe Massa came so close to winning the Driver’s championship again in 2008 but lost the title in the very last minutes of the race. Hamilton managed to overtake Glock in the final corner of the race to earn him the extra point he needed to win the championship. Ferrari did manage to take home the Constructors championship that season though as Kimi and Felippe combined were an unbeatable force during the season.

Since then Ferrari fans have had very little to celebrate, with many fans of F1 betting that the team would even be so embarrassed that they would leave the sport for good. Last year they managed to regain some of their competitive spirit by winning three races in the 2015 season, which was three more than they managed to win in 2014.
