Goff sets the pace in BTCC second practice as team mate Smith flies – Literally!

Goff didnt realise he was quickest (Photo by Marc Waller)Jack Goff put his Eurotech Honda Civic at the top of the time screens in second practice for the BTCC at Donington.

It was an incredibly close session with the top for separated by just 0.040 Seconds and the top twenty four separated by less than a second.

Goff just beat the impressive Jake Hill’s VW CC with Tom Ingram’s Toyota and Matt Neal’s Honda just behind that. If qualifying is as close it could be an incredibly unpredictable session. Goff hadn’t realised quite how quick he really was;

“I’m a lot happier now I’m out of the car and I’ve seen the time!” said Goff. “We had a bit of cross-communication on the radio and I thought I was four-tenths off the pace! It’s looking okay. The car isn’t perfect yet but I’m confident in the Eurotech Racing guys and in the Honda Civic Type R, so hopefully we can go and take it to the top guys in qualifying.

“I’ve never gone fantastically well around here in the past so hopefully we can put that right. I’m quite good in the rain as well, so I’m hopeful whatever the conditions may be.”

Rob Austin looked set to repeat his first session success but his time was beaten by the final top four towards the end, leaving him in fifth place. Mike Epps showed that it wasn’t only Jake Hill making the Team Hard VWs quick as he took sixth.

Shedden took seventh only slightly behind the top runners with Chris Smiley an excellent eighth for BTC Norlin. Aiden Moffat continued his good day with ninth for Laser Tools Racing.

Ollie Jackson completed the top ten in his AMD Tuning Audi. The Audis having been looking just on the verge of success for a while and Jackson will be hoping he has finally unlocked the pace in the car.

Halfords Yuasa Racing completed its own encouraging practice programme as reigning champion Gordon Shedden claimed seventh with maximum success ballast on board. Team mate Ant Whorton-Eales was twenty seventh but still only just over a second off the fastest time.

Daniel Lloyd was the best of the MGs just outside the top ten in eleventh ahead of Dave Newsham in the second BTC Norlin Chevrolet.

Thirteenth was Jeff Smith who now, along with team co-ordinator Jo Polley, flies to Oulton to Qualify for the Mini Challenge races that take place on Monday before returning to Donington to take part on qualifying!

Jo was already in her racing overalls in the garage and they had a buggy waiting to take them to the helicopter waiting on the edge of the circuit boundary.

Adam Morgan’s Mac Tools Mercedes was fourteenth ahead of a disappointed Colin Turkington. His BMW team mate Andrew Jordan completed the top sixteen.
