Abarth 500X

Abarth

Abarth Fiat’s new Abarth 500X isn’t scheduled to be released until the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean we’re completely in the dark about what to expect from the company’s new crossover vehicle.

If you’re in the market for something that can combine the rugged versatility of an SUV with the everyday practicality of a hatchback or estate, read on to find out more.

Learning from Past Mistakes
While the original Abarth 500X received mostly positive reviews, the consensus wasn’t unanimous. While many critics found it fun to drive and praised its sporty good looks, others felt that it wasn’t as practical as some of its other competitors. Despite these criticisms, though, Fiat seems determined to create another performance-oriented vehicle that aims to take advantage of the increasingly lucrative crossover class, where the company feel they are currently underrepresented. The 500X is expected to be primarily positioned against the MINI Countryman and the Nissan Juke Nismo RS.

More Than Just a Face Lift
According to exclusive images at Auto Express, the 500X’s originally high-riding stance will be lowered for the new Abarth model. The bumpers will be made chunkier, the side-skirts more pronounced, and you’ll have the option of fitting larger wheels than the 17” and 18” options available on the last version. As well as a new body kit, the Abarth will also see a performance increase as it’s expected to use the same 1.75-litre turbo found in the Alfa Romeo 4C. This would mean you could expect to reach 0-62 mph in less than seven seconds.

Pricing Expectations and Additional Fees
With the vehicle not expected to be released until September, exact pricing figures are still unknown. However, we can expect an increase over the £14,595-£25,845 price range than the regular 500X retails for. Considering the performance boost, you may also want to account for an increase in the amount of road tax you have to pay, as well as the cost of insurance and breakdown cover. These additional fees are worth factoring in when you make your purchasing decision, so make sure you’re aware of all the facts when the time comes.

The new Abarth will be just one of many cars released this year so try to keep your options open. You never know, your criteria for a new car may change dramatically between now and the end of the year.
